Beijing based artist Yan Jun creates new thought structures via sound and language.

Yan's current sound works deploy inventive configurations of headphones which allow groups of listeners to share an extended reflexive ganglion cluster.

Multiple headphones are linked via a hub to a recorder and a pair of mics which in turn feedback via a single pair of head-free headphones. Akin to a temporary external neural net the listeners form a symbiotic organism as they share a single set of ears while their collective body impacts upon the audio environment. By deploying a variety of microphones in motion to capture phonography near and far afield a backdrop is provided for the participants which grounds subsequent audio events.

The scenes shift with immersive microfeedback, creating dynamic tension between the everyday world around us and the linked individual nervous systems. Subtle body movements and improvised actions yield instantaneous aural shifts of great intensity.

Ethan Crenson @ 78rpm : Hazzanut

Artist and curator Ethan Crenson shares amazing platters from his expansive 78rpm collection. Brooklyn blocks echo with these mournful melodies that cry out from open windows. Presenting seven records by Jewish cantors (hazzanim) and one by an actor-singer from the 1920's Yiddish theater.

"One of the earliest recordings here is a memorial to the victims of the Titanic disaster recorded in 1913. Four of the records, all by Mordechai Hershman, are from the years between the World Wars, an era considered the "golden age" of cantorial singing. The songs are powerful, plaintive, soulful, and to me, very mysterious." - E.C.

Mordechai Hershman (1888–1940) around was a hazzan in Vilna. After serving in World War I, he emigrated to Brooklyn and took the position of hazzan at Temple Beth El.

Noah Nachbush (1885-1970) was an actor of the influential Vilna Group. He emigrated to the US in 1923 where he became a singer-actor in the Yiddish theater.

Samuel Kligfeld was cantor for the Genesis Hebrew Center in Crestwood, New York. He performed on the radio and television in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Zavel Kwartin (1874-1952) was born in Russia. He became Obercantor of the Queen Elizabet Temple in Vienna in 1903. Invited to perform in the US in 1914, his tour was postponed by the outbreak of World War I. He completed the tour in 1920 and decided to stay in the US permanently as hazzan of the Temple Emanuel in Borough Park, Brooklyn. Upon his death he was buried in Israel in 1952.

Josef "Yossele" Rosenblatt (1882-1933), a child prodigy from a long line of cantors, was born in Ukraine. His first position was in Hungary at the age of 18 . Later, he served as cantor in Hamburg, followed by a position in Harlem, New York's First Hungarian Congregation Ohab Zedek. He had a singing role in the film the 1923 film 'The Jazz Singer'.

A unique synthesis of sound, ___________ is an arboreal specialist. It prefers coniferous stands but also may be found in deciduous tree and shrubs. This dynamic noise has deep green upperparts and a striking pattern of purple and white on the underside of the ___________.
The upper edges of the effects chain are accented with black, and the distal portions of the dual horns are tinged purple or dark brown. ___________ are difficult to observe unless found in a patch of young trees where they are know to erupt with lightening manoeuvres.

BOB BELLERUE : Rainbow Luthiers of the Dusk

Rainbow Luthiers of the Dusk

City of angels native son and maker of noise Bob Bellerue has transplanted his noise culture to Eastern shores and now traverses Brooklyn blocks. He performs solo, works as a duo with Raven Chacon as KILT, and collaborates far and wide including projects with Telecult Powers, Tecumseh, Francisco Meirino and Smegma.

Leaving an indelible mark on the Los Angeles scene through his music and by founding the performance space Il Corral, he encouraged experimental musicians by providing a safe haven for their atypical endeavors.

This track is built around a core Supercollider patch which Bob has been elaborating upon since 2001, along with 4 guitar pedals, a tube mic pre-amp, hollow body guitar, 14" spring reverb, loose guitar pickup, 2 radios, AM radio transmitter, 2 mixers, and 2 guitar cabinets.

"As a composer and performer, I'm less interested in a predictable journey through notated and pre-known paths of sound; I have my plans, but I'm more motivated by the slimmest sense I can achieve of rediscovering the material in the moment of sound making. Some times this comes from sudden changes of knob twiddling, or arranging my equipment in a slightly different way than I normally do, or listening from the other side of the room. External forces can be incorporated, accepted as part of the cosmos that is the sound. It may be more of a "sound happening" than a composition - setting up a situation with captured energy and seeing where it goes when you let it loose, more energy focused on listening to what is happening in the moment, rather than spewing my pre-digested masterpiece over a deaf, dumb and dead world. I'm not always a bombast, but I do have a morbid compulsion towards activating the gut through energy, and that is one way to activate my higher capacities as they say, or, the way to my heart is through oscillating my innards. I don't generally work via compositional theories, but poetic / revolutionary ones - be yourself, keep it radical, don't wait for anyone's permission, do things the wrong way, listen to what is outside of your object(ive), don't follow every idea until they return twice or more to you, change the envelope, bring half your gear and make something happen, paraphrase the same Cage quote as often as possible ("a mistake is merely an inability to keep up with the present moment"), practice, improvise, mix it up, be brave and righteous, set your world on fire. Like I said, I have my plans, but I am often pouring piss and vinegar on them, and charring them in the fire of experience." -B.B.

JORDON SCHRANZ: cajas negras de las cruces

Jordon Schranz on mission, out from the Tigerasylum, running under desert skies to cross a continent and return to Brooklyn haunts.

With travels to tHE eASTERN sEABOARD on his mind,
Mr. Schranz artfully folds the body of a double bass
into a number of small black boxes.
With experience he evades random road blocks.
Outside the limits of Las Cruces, New Mexico,
a detour suggests itself around white sands, radium springs.
As the sun begins its rise, he reorients the far horizon.

The mountain range is not an illusion.
Quivers are loaded with the newly notched.
Swapping in and out of pinstripes, a camouflage of sorts,
he migrates east to walk solo alongside expanses of asphalt.
The dry air tracing back gold dusted trails near the dew line.

History and the water table shifts, a sudden rumble below our feet.
This seepage is inevitable despite attempts at civil engineering.
Currents shift crosslength to create patterns in the depths.
With guidance from the Black Saints, paths are revealed in the darkness.
Temporary rivers roll, extending their fingers
Sun baked brick bounces a question mark off steel glass towers.
Heatwaves carry a nOISE tRACK on the wind.
Travails to challenge the general dynamics of industrial reasoning.

Whence he crossed an arroyo, where once was parched,
a river now flows forth.
Copper canyons, echos of erosion
A raw wind, carrying the memory of rain.

Paul Haney from the extraordinary label Obsolete Units returns to home base Brooklyn after a romp at the Neon Marshmallow fest in Chicago.

Unleashing noise on the molecular level as Rust Worship, he performs blood music for broken machines, turntable and tape decks.

Eject that old TDK C-90 metal cassette from your deck and throw this in sans Dolby noise reduction and let the corrosion begin.

CORE OF THE COALMAN

Core of the Coalman aka Jorge Boehringer

Core of the Coalman consists of continuity and discontinuity for viola, voice and circuits on the border between order and chaos. Sonically diverse and sometimes explosive in texture, Core of the Coalman emphasizes the physicality of sound and its psychological relationship with our perceptual and environmental mechanics.

As Jorge envisions his multi-faceted approach:
"A compound eye may consist of thousands of individual photoreception units.
The image perceived is a combination of inputs from the numerous ommatidia (individual "eye units"), which are located on a convex surface, thus point in slightly different directions.  This results in a specific type of focus, in which multiple systems of polymathic pursuits are allowed to progress at their own rates, attaining, as such, a unified, rather than fractured, perceptive, though a perspective different from that enjoyed by our ancestors...human and otherwise."

While currently based in Prague, CZ, for the better part of the past decade Jorge was a vital part of the San Francisco Bay Area's fertile noise scene and counted among his collaborators members of
D Yellow Swans, Grouper, Marfa and Ne-Af, XBXRX, 16 Bitch Pile Up, Liz Albee, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Miba, and the Grey Daturas.

Jorge is joined tonight by good friend Che Chen.
