eMBARKER
is the project of Michael Roy Barker.

eMBARKER burns electronic waveforms
that splinter like porcupines rolled out by a steamroller.
Circuits in collision,
improvisations for post-ADHD living.

Sound-tracked video lives from the lost and found.
Audio obsessions. Experiments and interactions with found media.
Rewound and repurposed audioscapes that disassemble and challenge mainstream media identities. Frenetic offerings to alternative paths of thought and action.

Movements on the fractured table via live electronic interface.
>sweat >sparks >sound.
Modular synths, radical routing and vox processing.
Clamped strings and black boxes
> bent/retooled.

Multiples and mutations gathered to form a monophonic signal.
A singular voice.

founded Louffa Press to promote new, innovative microfictions in limited run, handmade editions. His stories and interviews have appeared in Word Riot, Rain Taxi, The Rumpus, Fringe and others. He has been playing the amplified bicycle for seven years and lives in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

tAMARA yADAO employs structure in improvisation to highlight failure aesthetics and meaning in conceptual methods of sound-making and juxtaposition. Current explorations include compositions for re-purposed machines, electroacoustic composition in virtual space and the spoken word. Materials may include house-hold electronics, mechanical instruments, guitar and voice. Pieces are purposed for the single channel, multi-channel performance installation and live performance.

mIKEY IQ jONES often works in a solo medium, using primitive sampling devices to process and arrange live sound materials drawn from the artist's voice, body, and arsenal of found object percussion. Glycemic is an improvised text arrangement derived from the artist's reading excerpts of his diabetic food diary, which logs blood glucose levels, medication dosages, and food intake.

颜峻 : Yan Jun

Beijing based artist Yan Jun creates new thought structures via sound and language.

Yan's current sound works deploy inventive configurations of headphones which allow groups of listeners to share an extended reflexive ganglion cluster.

Multiple headphones are linked via a hub to a recorder and a pair of mics which in turn feedback via a single pair of head-free headphones. Akin to a temporary external neural net the listeners form a symbiotic organism as they share a single set of ears while their collective body impacts upon the audio environment. By deploying a variety of microphones in motion to capture phonography near and far afield a backdrop is provided for the participants which grounds subsequent audio events.

The scenes shift with immersive microfeedback, creating dynamic tension between the everyday world around us and the linked individual nervous systems. Subtle body movements and improvised actions yield instantaneous aural shifts of great intensity.

BOB BELLERUE : Rainbow Luthiers of the Dusk

Rainbow Luthiers of the Dusk

City of angels native son and maker of noise Bob Bellerue has transplanted his noise culture to Eastern shores and now traverses Brooklyn blocks. He performs solo, works as a duo with Raven Chacon as KILT, and collaborates far and wide including projects with Telecult Powers, Tecumseh, Francisco Meirino and Smegma.

Leaving an indelible mark on the Los Angeles scene through his music and by founding the performance space Il Corral, he encouraged experimental musicians by providing a safe haven for their atypical endeavors.

***

This track is built around a core Supercollider patch which Bob has been elaborating upon since 2001, along with 4 guitar pedals, a tube mic pre-amp, hollow body guitar, 14" spring reverb, loose guitar pickup, 2 radios, AM radio transmitter, 2 mixers, and 2 guitar cabinets.

"As a composer and performer, I'm less interested in a predictable journey through notated and pre-known paths of sound; I have my plans, but I'm more motivated by the slimmest sense I can achieve of rediscovering the material in the moment of sound making. Some times this comes from sudden changes of knob twiddling, or arranging my equipment in a slightly different way than I normally do, or listening from the other side of the room. External forces can be incorporated, accepted as part of the cosmos that is the sound. It may be more of a "sound happening" than a composition - setting up a situation with captured energy and seeing where it goes when you let it loose, more energy focused on listening to what is happening in the moment, rather than spewing my pre-digested masterpiece over a deaf, dumb and dead world. I'm not always a bombast, but I do have a morbid compulsion towards activating the gut through energy, and that is one way to activate my higher capacities as they say, or, the way to my heart is through oscillating my innards. I don't generally work via compositional theories, but poetic / revolutionary ones - be yourself, keep it radical, don't wait for anyone's permission, do things the wrong way, listen to what is outside of your object(ive), don't follow every idea until they return twice or more to you, change the envelope, bring half your gear and make something happen, paraphrase the same Cage quote as often as possible ("a mistake is merely an inability to keep up with the present moment"), practice, improvise, mix it up, be brave and righteous, set your world on fire. Like I said, I have my plans, but I am often pouring piss and vinegar on them, and charring them in the fire of experience." -B.B.

++++++++++++++++++++++

With the volume of the Atlantic Ocean as a lens between bodies, this architectural interventional audio performance gathers and further iterates ideas from Andy's gallery installation at PROGRAM, Berlin.
Gallery goers were encouraged to listen and use audio tools to map the parameters of the gallery's architectural space.
The tools being Andy Graydon's 12 acetate recordings, dubplates pressed from field recordings of the ambient sound of NYC museums and exhibition sites.

For the LMAKseries performance, the dubplates of the PROGRAM installation were displaced into the hands of six guests who mixed them to manipulate the aural environment of the gallery. By process of overlapping their performances and building on the others contributions the guest artists dubbed the space of exhibition, remixing and overlapping the artifacts of audio of other exhibition spaces. The dubplates' acetate body decays through the friction of play yet the live spontaneous reworking yields possibilities for new material, new plates, new structures.

"By installing excavated stones from New Jersey in a gallery, Robert Smithson, in the late 1960s, revealed the dialectic between abstract and actual locations. Sometimes in containers, sometimes piled, the stones in the gallery represented a far away location without resembling it. Something of New Jersey, Smithson maintained, was held in those rocks and their displacement resulted in the expansion of the original site, both physically and conceptually.
The Site Non-Site dialectic, as Smithson called it, feels particularly familiar today as our daily lives are continually reshaped by place-defying technologies in communication, information and travel."

- Carson Chan : notes on the installation at PROGRAM, Berlin.

WHISPERING SPECTRES

Black box installation consisting of a custom quad system with
LIVE active filtered FM radio signals.

"These radio signals are being passed through many band pass filters, a type of equalizer that allows a small range of frequencies through while attenuating frequencies outside of this range.
In effect, most of the audio signal is “erased” except for a narrow band of frequencies. The whispers highlight small, hidden musical moments that are occurring on FM radio, but are usually rendered inaudible by other elements in the sound." -W.S.

CORE OF THE COALMAN

Core of the Coalman aka Jorge Boehringer

Core of the Coalman
consists of continuity and discontinuity for viola, voice and circuits on the border between order and chaos. Sonically diverse and sometimes explosive in texture, Core of the Coalman emphasizes the physicality of sound and its psychological relationship with our perceptual and environmental mechanics.

As Jorge envisions his multi-faceted approach:
"A compound eye may consist of thousands of individual photoreception units.
The image perceived is a combination of inputs from the numerous ommatidia (individual "eye units"), which are located on a convex surface, thus point in slightly different directions.  This results in a specific type of focus, in which multiple systems of polymathic pursuits are allowed to progress at their own rates, attaining, as such, a unified, rather than fractured, perceptive, though a perspective different from that enjoyed by our ancestors...human and otherwise."

While currently based in Prague, CZ, for the better part of the past decade Jorge was a vital part of the San Francisco Bay Area's fertile noise scene and counted among his collaborators members of
D Yellow Swans, Grouper, Marfa and Ne-Af, XBXRX, 16 Bitch Pile Up, Liz Albee, 7 Year Rabbit Cycle, Miba, and the Grey Daturas.

Jorge is joined tonight by good friend Che Chen.
